With a pre-conference dinner at The Edinburgh Castle on 28th August 2019
BNY Mellon are delighted to invite to your our annual Northern Investment Conference at the Balmoral Hotel on 29th August.
Politics and Brexit have been high on most people’s agenda for the past few years and this year more than ever. With the exception of royal babies and perhaps Game of Thrones, there has been little relief from elections and politicians since Thursday 18 September 2014 – the date of the Scottish Independence Referendum.
Our political heroes and villains agree on nothing it seems, not even the facts. Given the dominance of political horror stories, any stranger to these shores may be surprised by the current economic reality of full employment and growing real wages in the UK. Even more shocking, despite almost constant pessimism, UK investors have enjoyed pretty decent investment returns over the intervening years in most asset classes.
The conference will not focus on any one theme, only a fact-based agenda and one of the best line-ups of fund manager speakers that BNY Mellon can offer. Interesting ideas, investment opportunity and perspective – there may even be some humour – for investors who can look beyond the dismal politics of our time to find a sensible home for clients’ capital.
So, if you can tear your eyes away from the political pantomime for a day, please register below and we look forward to seeing you in Edinburgh.

Nick is leader of the Newton Global Equity Income strategy. He has been a member of the global equity income team since 2012.
He is a member of a number of investment groups, including chairing the equity income group. From 2000 to 2012 Nick was the lead manager on a variety of global multi-asset strategies. Prior to joining Newton in 2000, Nick acquired a range of experience as a UK equities manager at Morley Fund Management and as an analyst at Sun Alliance. Nick is an associate member of the UK Society of Investment Professionals.
Andreas Ekström focuses on the online world, media, and digital equality as a senior staff writer for the Swedish daily newspaper Sydsvenskan.
Having written a number of books, Andreas turned his journalistic curiosity towards the ever increasing influence of Google. Although not a programmer, designer or engineer, in the national bestseller ”The Google Code”, Andreas took a look at the search giant and what it said about society and the world. Andreas has made a thorough study of Google; its beginnings, the corporate and organisational culture, its rise to dominance, and its constant evolution into new areas. He considers how the company has changed to meet new user demands, its gathering of data, and its business, design and technology strategies. He asks whether we should be so trusting, what does our view of Google results say about politics and business, and how should the world react to the answers.
Andreas is now one of Europe's most sought-after futurists. As well as helping organisations to understand how the digital revolution transforms society, he offers an insight into the tech world from a truly human perspective. He has been a TED speaker, with over a million viewers, has won several awards, has spoken in more than twenty countries and his works have been translated into over thirty languages.
